To curb elephant poaching, conservationists are turning to technology. The newest tool in this tech arsenal is the real-time tracking collar, developed by Save the Elephants, a Kenya-based nonprofit, and currently used on more than 320 elephants in 10 countries.
The group's researchers have developed algorithms that can be used with signals on the collar to automatically detect when an elephant stops moving (meaning it may die), slows down (meaning it may be injured), or is headed toward a danger zone, Such as areas with rampant poaching.
